WINNIPEG: Richardson International Ltd. officially opened a new canola processing plant near Yorkton, Sask. that will triple the company’s production capacity.

The Winnipeg-based food processor says the $170 million state-of-the-art plant is capable of handling up to 2,400 metric tonnes of canola per day (840,000 metric-tonnes annually) for the daily production of 1,000 metric tonnes of fully refined, food-grade canola oil. Combined with production from its Lethbridge, Alta. plant, the new facility will triple production capacity for global distribution of its oilseed products.

The new plant will create about 70 new technical and professional jobs, plus “opportunities relating to maintenance, repairs, trucking and various other activities relating to the plant’s operation,” the company said in a statement.
