Short-lived solar plant closes
United Solar shutters Ontario plant months after it invested $12 million.
LASALLE, Ont.—A southwestern Ontario solar plant will close just months after it opened.
United Solar says demand for solar panels is declining worldwide and will close all four of its plants, including those in Michigan and in Mexico.
The company says the closures are temporary, hoping to reopen sometime in the new year, depending on demand.
In the meantime, 20 full-time employees at United’s Lasalle plant have been told they are out of work, effective immediately.
The Lasalle plant opened in May after United invested more than $12 million to renovate a former plastics factory and purchase new equipment.
The 7,000 square-foot plant had a production capacity of 15 mega-watts and employed 80 people
