Hydro One funds pre-apprentice program in Thunder Bay

Confederation College to prepare tech students for electrical utility careers.

THUNDER BAY, Ont. — Hydro One is funding pre-apprentice programs with Confederation College in Thunder Bay that will provide training to students interested in working in the electrical utility sector.

The $750,000 investment will focus on youth and First Nations and Métis communities, and Hydro One said the program, in conjunction with Northern College, will help build local trades capacity across Northern Ontario.

With up to 36% of Hydro One’s workforce eligible to retire in the next five years, it’s looking ahead by ensuring people will be available locally to fill positions.

“Our technology students will know that when they graduate, there will be jobs available. It’s a win-win for all involved,” said college president Jim Madder.

The funding comes through Hydro One’s College Consortium, which supports scholarships, curriculum development, co-op placements and equipment to educate the next generation of energy professionals.
