Ballard Power’s methanol power generation systems headed to Africa

Clean-energy power supplier to provide backup power for African telecom provider.

September 11, 2012

VANCOUVER—Ballard Power Systems has signed an equipment supply agreement for up to 192 ElectraGenTM-ME methanol fuelled power generation systems with its African distributor.

The agreement with Inala Technologies is effective through Oct. 2013.

Financial details of the agreement have not been released.

A purchase order for the first 32 systems has also been received, with plans to deploy the systems in the network of an African mobile telecom operator to provide backup power in grid failures.

It’s been a busy summer for the Vancouver-based clean-energy fuel cell provider, who in August announced the sale of 102 of its fuel cell generators to a telecom provider in Indonesia. In July, the company acquired IdaTech’s fuel cell product lines in a deal worth $7.7 million.
