Uniboard invests $38.5M in its Val-d’Or wood products mill

LAVAL, Que. — Uniboard is investing $38.5 million in its Val-d’Or, Que. wood products plant, the second phase of a major upgrade project to build a world-class particleboard and thermally fused laminate (TFL) mill.
The company, based in Laval, Que., said this new round of modernization will focus on screening, sifting, milling and intermediary storage equipment, which will lay the foundation for upgrading the press and finishing lines.
The project’s new dry preparation capabilities will substantially improve fiber processing efficiency and also involves a new building with state-of-the-art protection safety systems for our employees.
Uniboard received $15 million in loans from the QUebec government, and a $4.9 million nonrepayable contribution from NRCan. The funding will allow the company to upgrade the production chain at the particle board mill in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, to increase productivity.
The company employs 855 people in Quebec at five mills located in the Abitibi‑Témiscamingue (two mills), Bas-Saint-Laurent and Laurentides regions, and in Laval. It’s Quebec’s main manufacturer of reconstituted wood products, supplying manufacturers of furniture, cabinets and construction materials.
