EDMONTON – TELUS will invest $4.2 billion to develop new internet infrastructure and facilities across Alberta through 2018 to support the growing technology requirements of the province’s resource sector.

In 2015, TELUS expects to upgrade every wireless site in Alberta to 4G LTE; connect more homes and businesses to its fibre optic network to enhance Internet speeds and continue to deploy 700MHz spectrum for use in rural and urban areas.

For businesses, the company says it will invest heavily in core areas of network, security, cloud computing and Internet-connected devices to facilitate Internet of Things (IoT) growth, specifically for the oil and gas sector.

The additional investment, when combined with operational expenses, brings the telecom giant’s total investment in the province over the next four years to $11 billion.
