Canadian energy and mines ministers in Halifax
Groups call for action to prevent mine waste leaks similar to the Mount Polley in BC.
HALIFAX — Energy and mines ministers from across Canada are in Halifax for the beginning of a two-day conference.
Provincial and territorial ministers will meet with federal Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford and industry officials.
A coalition of environmental and First Nations groups is calling for immediate action to prevent mine waste leaks similar to the Mount Polley disaster in British Columbia last year.
The coalition, which includes MiningWatch Canada, wants the ministers to support the implementation of all of the recommendations released in January by an independent expert panel, which reviewed the massive tailings leak.
Twenty-four million cubic metres of mine waste flowed into area lakes and waterways last August after a breach of the tailings dam at the central BC, mine.
