Ballard to supply New Flyer with US fuel cell bus power module

Delivery is planned for later this year.

VANCOUVER — Ballard Power Systems has received a purchase order from New Flyer Industries for a FCvelocity-HD7 fuel cell power module for the unnamed North American bus manufacturer.

Delivery is planned for later this year.

The module will be used in a New Flyer fuel cell bus that will be sent to Altoona, Penn. for testing before being deployed into service under the US Federal Transit Administration (FTA) National Fuel Cell Bus Program. The project will be administered by CALSTART, a member-supported organization for clean transportation alternatives.

New Flyer Industries is a manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses. Its portfolio includes drive systems powered by fuel cells, clean diesel, natural gas, electric trolley and energy-efficient diesel-electric hybrid vehicles.

Ballard has partnered with New Flyer since 1991, having powered fuel cell buses in Vancouver, Chicago and the Palm Springs, Calif. since in 1991. More recently, the two companies partnered to deliver a fuel cell demonstration fleet of 20 buses for BC Transit, which ran from 2009 to 2014 in Whistler, BC.
